Acne occurs as a result of  the pore becoming clogged with hormones and other substances from the skin's oil glands or sebaceous glands. When our natural oil or sebum is blocked from reaching the skin's surface, lesions commonly called pimples develop. When the pore is clogged by these substances, acne bacteria that are normally found on the skin begin to multiply and cause an immune response as white blood cells arrive to stop the infection. This process causes acne inflammation.

Acne inflammation is recognizable by the red surface area that is swollen and is painful to the touch. Acne occurs on the back, neck, face, chest, and shoulders. Acne causes emotional distress in many people though it is not a serious threat to life. Acne can cause severe permanent scarring. Acne scars are visible and may require surgical removal for extreme cases.
